The Challenge
The average person in the UK has a carbon footprint of 10 tonnes of CO2 a year which includes 2 tonnes from travel. For those who drive 10,000 miles a year, this adds a further 4 tonnes of CO2. However, through efficient driving we can reduce our emissions by up to 25%.
With a vision to provide products and services to help individuals and business to make better decisions that bring balance to our planet for future generations, DriveKey engaged Conjure to design and develop Karai – an AI eco-driving companion, which monitors Co2 usage and allows users to offset their carbon, empowering individuals to reduce their negative impact on the environment by helping users drive more eco-sensitively.
"Working with Conjure on the Karai project was the best decision we could have made as we didn’t just find a service provider but a true partner."

The Problem of Technical Feasibility
DriveKey initially approached Conjure to technically investigate third party solutions that could provide vehicle data for the DriveKey application. DriveKey had the idea, but had realised technical constraints and issues surrounding a lack of available real-time vehicle data. They needed technical validation and a solution to these blockers after working with other agencies who couldn’t get them through the core technical feasibility.
To investigate the technical possibilities and data available in current vehicles, we quickly built a technology prototype iOS mobile application to demonstrate telematic vehicle data availability and suitability. We experimented with third party solutions to find the optimal SDK to provide vehicle data for the application, identifying two potential partners with proven AI technologies using mobile phone sensors and backend tech to monitor driver behaviour and style. We used these SDKs to build our proof of concept app and demonstrate a possible mobile first solution. Following the success of the initial phase of work, we progressed into designing the MVP.
Experience Design & Build
Designing the experience started with developing the vision for the Karai iOS mobile app. This involved workshopping with the DriveKey team to develop everything from proposition, to brand design direction. Our design team spearheaded the creative direction for thematic design, UX, UI and technical design, developing an elemental design system and a digital brand language.
Our dedicated iOS team developed the front-end application, back-end APIs, telematics integrations, database and infrastructure requirements, which then went through a thorough user testing process, both in-house and externally.
Future-proofing
To future-proof Karai Conjure helped DriveKey manage their feature roadmap, technical architecture, vendor selection and requirements. When designing the experience Conjure created strategic business canvases, implementing our proven idea evolution process based on agile methodologies to deliver maximum business value for DriveKey. Keeping in mind the longevity of the application and the feature roadmap ready for international launch, Conjure built the backend to allow for data scalability, international currency and multi-country vehicle database support.
Working Smartly Together
Our continued partnership with DriveKey involves product maintenance alongside delivering the evolving Karai product. Embedding ourselves as an internal team, we’ve introduced DriveKey to potential partners for Karai, offering ongoing advice on project roadmapping, post application rollout business support, defining strategy for product positioning, product marketing, social and PR support to ensure DriveKey success in kick-starting their new product on UK soil.
Driving Positive Action
A data analytics driven, performance tracking, AI driving companion application. Karai tracks vehicle carbon emissions in real-time, whilst the carbon credit management platform automates the carbon offsetting process. The user experience is simple, effective and wholly dedicated to supporting the international Carbon reduction effort through projects globally.
